For WooCommerce merchants
500,000 stores are stuck on a 2.0-star tax plugin because it forces Jetpack on them.
WooCommerce's own tax plugin has 500,000 installs and a 2.0-star rating because it forces every store onto Jetpack and a WordPress.com account. TaxTable loads your state's own published sales-tax rate and boundary files straight into Woo's native tax rate table instead — no Jetpack, no third-party tax service, no order data ever leaves your store. Free for your first state; $79/yr unlocks every Streamlined Sales Tax member state plus quarterly auto-refresh.
Install the free plugin from the WordPress.org directory first — it covers your first state at no cost.
What 500,000 merchants are actually complaining about
Automattic's own WooCommerce Tax plugin sits at 2.0 stars. The complaint in the 1-star reviews isn't that the tax math is wrong — it's the dependency:
- “Hidden Jetpack dependency and blocked for ‘regulated’ stores”
- “Requires wordpress.com connection, too bad”
- “Forcing JETPACK” / “Trojan Horse”
TaxTable fills the same native WooCommerce tax-rate table, but from a file you download yourself and a plugin that never phones home except to check a license key.
Frequently asked
Why does WooCommerce's own tax plugin need Jetpack?
WooCommerce Tax and WooCommerce Shipping both route through Automattic's WordPress.com connection layer, which requires Jetpack. Stores that can't or won't connect to WordPress.com — often for data-residency or security-policy reasons — are locked out of automated rates entirely. That's the single most common complaint in its 1-star reviews.
Where do the rates actually come from?
Directly from each state's own files published under the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Agreement (SSUTA) Section 305 — a rate file and a ZIP-boundary file, refreshed quarterly, free and public at streamlinedsalestax.org. TaxTable joins them and exports WooCommerce's own native tax-rate CSV format. No third-party tax service sits in between.
Does that mean I'm protected if a rate is wrong?
SSUTA Section 306 requires member states to relieve sellers of liability for collecting the wrong amount where that resulted from relying on the state's own published rate, boundary, or jurisdiction data. TaxTable loads exactly that data into your store's own editable tax tables — it doesn't calculate anything itself.
Does any order data leave my store?
No. You download your state's own two files and upload them in wp-admin; TaxTable joins them locally and hands back a CSV to import into WooCommerce's native tax settings. The only outbound call the plugin makes is a license check for the paid tier — never order or customer data.
What's free vs. paid?
Free covers one state, forever — enough for most single-state stores. TaxTable Pro ($79/yr) unlocks every Streamlined Sales Tax member state (24 today), so multi-state sellers can generate a table for each one.
Which states are covered?
The 24 states that are full members of the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Agreement and publish rate/boundary files under it. States outside SSUTA aren't covered — TaxTable only ships data it can trace to an official, liability-relief-backed source.
TaxTable is an informational tool, not tax advice. It loads each state's own published rate and boundary data into WooCommerce's native tax settings; confirm your obligations with a tax professional.
